If Only....Sting Had Joined The WWE

If Only…Sting had joined the WWE

There are a countless number of scenarios that contain a what if factor. What if Neil Armstrong broke a leg and couldn’t fly to the moon? What if George W Bush wasn’t elected President and we didn’t begin a war in Iraq? What if Vince McMahon Senior never sold his company to his son, Vince McMahon junior? For all of these questions pose a variety of avenues with endless possibilities. Even now in the year 2009, wrestling fans from Australia to Brazil still ask that one question that every fan wanted to find out in the 90’s - Would the Franchise Sting, the questionable top man in WCW, go to the WWE?

Now let’s go back in time to that infamous Hell In A Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind in 1998.

The Undertaker and Mankind are now perched 20 feet above the ground fighting on top of the cell.
“Oh my God they really are in a dangerous position up there King” J.R. says with anxiously.
“Oh yeah, I havn’t been up that high since I was 21” King replies.
The Undertaker and Mankind battle close to the edge of the cell, nearing a 20 feet drop. Suddenly the Undertaker launches Mankind from the top of the cell all the way to the unforgiving concrete.
“Oh no…no” J.R. cries in pain.
“He killed him” King shockingly replies.

The match is at a standstill, the crowd boos the Undertaker for executing such a devastating maneuver. The crowd is angry - they know that Mankind is hurt and he will be sidelined for a while now. The crowd start throwing garbage at the Undertaker but most of it doesn’t get anywhere near him and lands ringside. Howard Finkel suddenly receives a paper cup in his face!
Suddenly…the lights go out.
“The lights are out J.R., what is happening? Have we paid our bill?”
“I think so King, let me tell you fans something, the Undertaker is the only man in the WWE these lights go down for what could be happening here?”
The undertaker stands alone on top of the cell not knowing what is happening.
The lights come back on and WCW’s top star, Sting is on the top of the cell standing face to face with the Undertaker. The fans cheer in shock of seeing sting in a WWE arena.
“Can you believe it King, that’s Sting” J.R. excitedly says.
“Never in all my years did I think I will see these two face to face.” King adds.

Suddenly sting grabs a baseball bat form his long black trench coat and hammers the Undertaker with it repeatedly. Like a man possessed Sting continues to batter the life out of the Undertaker. The lights dim and Sting returns to the rafters leaving the Undertaker in a bloody heap. The match is declared a no contest.

The next night on Raw, the Undertaker is irate. He paces to the ring knocking out staff in the process.
“Sting, what you need to learn boy is that I am The Undertaker, I am the lord of darkness. Up north I rule the dead people and you are about to become one of them.”
Sting never appears on the next few weeks of Raw, however the Undertaker has been finding scorpions in his luggage and they have been dropping from the rafters after his matches. Sting’s next appearance would be at the July ppv Fully Loaded. The Undertaker is scheduled to compete one on one with the Stone cold Steve Austin for the WWE championship in a First Blood match.

Towards the end of the match the referee is busy subduing a fan who has unexpectedly entered the ring. Whilst the referee and security are occupied with removing the hefty fan, Sting takes advantage. The fans attention is diverted to the sky as the Stinger sails downward towards the ring. He lands dead centre in the ring and nails the Undertaker three times in the head with the baseball bat. The Undertaker bleeds profusely, before Sting makes his exit back up to the rafters. The referee rejoins the wrestlers in the ring and sees that the Undertaker is bleeding and calls for the bell. Steve Austin is still out in the ring selling the earlier tombstone piledriver. After the match the Undertaker is red with anger and tombstones the referee and some officials.

That week on Smackdown a speechless Undertaker is in the ring and sits down gesturing towards the roof as if he is calling Sting out. It doesn’t take long before the lights go out and the Stinger is in the ring. The lights are back and boom boom Sting is nailing the Undertaker, but this Undertaker looks very different…
The real Undertaker comes from beneath the ring and drags Sting under the ring with him. One minute later the Undertaker pulls sting’s carcass out from under the ring covered in blood and the Undertaker stands tall over his nemesis.

“Summerslam” the undertaker says to Sting whilst letting out a sick laugh.

Summerslam has arrived and it is go time. The fans are strapped in to their seats for what will be a bumpy road.
“Tonight ladies and gentleman you will see a dream match between two of the all time greats in the business, in my opinion. It will be the legendary deadman the Undertaker taking on the franchise Sting here tonight, it’s gonna be a slobber knocker King.”
“You right J.R. and let’s not forget about puppies! In the divas battle royal tonight.”

It’s main event time and Sting has lowered from the rafters in his usual fashion the Undertaker is standing on the apron about to enter the ring. Here we go. It is a very solid match to begin with; the Undertaker has Sting off his feet a lot of the time during the match. Sting fights back by quickly executing three stinger splashes to the deadman. The match seems to be very even. As the 20 minute mark approaches the end is near.
The Undertaker lifts Sting up for the tombstone but Sting slides out and lands behind the Undertaker, Sting locks in the scorpion death drop and executes it perfectly on the Undertaker. Sting gets up to follow up but the Undertaker sits up out of nowhere Sting is shocked. Sting Irish whips taker in the corner and attempts a Stinger Splash, before he can connect the Undertaker locks his big hand on Sting’s neck and lifts him up for a powerful choke slam. Next is a tombstone piledriver for the win.
“The Undertaker has defeated Sting here in an epic contest at Summerslam, what a classic King”
“Oh it was worth the wait, all the blood loss, all the mind games culminated in a tremendous Summerslam contest.”

Indeed, we can question many decisions in wrestling - Katie Vick? But the most entertaining part of watching is the what if factor, the but if only factor. Sting joining the WWE would have been great for him and the company in the long run. With Sting still competing in TNA, there might be a slight chance of the above events transpiring…fingers crossed.
