What wrestling is missing part III
Date Added: November 04, 2009
Story By: Rio Ashley
Once again purveyors of the old school Rio Ashley has returned to whet your appetite with another segment of things that Professional Wrestling is missing. Once upon a time you could see your favorite wrestlers on TV showcasing their moves, and it wasn't a main eventer vs. main eventer it was a mid-carder or main eventer vs. a preliminary wrestler or in the immortal words "jobber"; my friends and I called them "generics". These were the guys that would already be in the ring limbering up when the star comes out to their music blaring then commence to getting beat up so that the star can add to his portfolio and build up to his first feud. I really enjoyed these matches because if you look closely, the generics were actually decent wrestlers. These matches were intriguing because it was a double anticipation First, you actually saw what the stars had in their arsenal; and second, you couldn't wait for the one day the generic would actually win one. Then came 1987, when the ultimate generics the Mulkey's beat the the Gladiators when one tripped over one of the Mulkeys and got pinned, after that you would believe that the generics had a chance, how many times did you look at a match with "leaping Lanny Poffo" (before the Genius days) and he read one of his great poems just to get beat after coming so close to winning. These guys made the star look good therefore, the stars and the generics got over with the crowd better and ,as a result, you looked forward to their matches when they got their major push. But at the same time you wanted to see Mike Boyettes' record that got to 0-150 to my last recollection get that first win. Nowadays, it's not any of these guys left , I feel professional wrestling would be better with these guys because they helped with the stars getting a bigger reputation. So, I say kudos to the Mulkeys, SD Jones' (RIP), the George Souths, the Jake the milkmans' and the Rocky Kings' for making my favorites look good and I hope you guys made a lot of money along the way. Until next time, may the old school live on!
