Thanksgiving

Story By: Rio Ashley
Hello my people, Rio Ashley is back. I missed the week of Thanksgiving but there is a point that I wanted to get to. That was the Thanksgiving cards. Now, back in the day there was a card that was held on Thanksgiving day and that was the NWA Starrcade. This was a card that at one point was the biggest show in wrestling; it even preceded Wrestlemania. The one thing that made these cards so special was that it ws always something new that came along AND there was always something big to happen. For example, in the first Starrcade in 1983, it was not only the day that Ric Flair won his second world title, but there was a dog collar match between Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine. Even the undercard matches were special you didn't get to see the central states champion all the time but he did defend the belt at Starrcade. Another thing about those matches were that they were memorable; I mean Flair won the world title 16 times but when did he win number 12? exactly, it's not remembered that often but we knew when he won number two we also knew when Sting beat Hogan for the title, or when Dusty won his first US title. Then the WWF came up with the Survivor Series in 1987 where there were teams competing in an series of elimination matches and a world title defense these cards were also memorable. Let me ask you, do you remember when Randy Savage made his WWF debut? no, but where did the Undertaker make his debut on Ted Dibiase's team in 1991? at the Survivor Series. These cards were good for the sport because it was a way to get a new audience. What other day are people at home? it would also be a time to introduce new people and new types of matches. Matches that come to mind were the dog collar match at Starrcade, the I quit match, and my personal favorite the scaffold match with the Road Warriors and the Midnight Express, plus you got to admit that the Survivor Series matches were new at the time but they too had matches like when Undertaker beat Hogan for the world title, we had the first Coffin match and the biggest upset I've seen when Sid Vicious beat Shawn Michaels for the title. Let's not forget the classic Bret vs. Shawn title match. All these matches, events, and surprises on Thanksgiving made these cards so special because you knew when they occured. Why were these PPV's stop being held on Thanksgiving day will always be a mystery to me. Next Week, I will resume my series of what our favorite sport is missing.
