Leandro Souza, a 26-year-old member of the Nova Uniao fight team, passed away just moments prior to weigh-ins for his fight at Shooto 43 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Thursday night.

Souza, nicknamed “Feijao,” was trained by Andre Pederneiras, the same head-man in charge of UFC champions Jose Aldo and Renan Barao.

Pederneiras confirmed the passing on his Facebook page. The event has since been completely cancelled.

“We are sad to report the death of Leandro Caetano de Souza,” the statement read. “The athlete has passed away in Botafogo’s UPA. We don’t know the reasons why yet. We would like to express our condolences to all friends and family.”
