Titus O’Neil Comments on Darren Young’s Announcement, Reaction From WWE Locker Room

Titus O'Neil

Appearing on 4th & Pain, Titus O’Neil talks openly and in-depth about the reaction of the WWE locker room to Darren Young’s decision to reveal he was gay. He says the reaction has been “very positive.”

On Darren Young: “Darren is a great friend of mine away from the ring. I consider him a part of my family. My kids call him ‘Uncle Darren.’ They run, they play, they joke with him. For him to exhibit the courage that he did to go and discuss his sexual orientation to the world was a brave move to some, but to me is just an act of what type of man he is. You can only live behind certain people’s stereotypes or certain barriers in life for so long. At some point you have to say ‘man, to hell with it. I am who I am. I do what I do and I’m going to be who I want to be.’ ”

O’Neil says he’s know about Young’s sexual orientation for “a while,” but that it was irrelevant.

On how the reaction would be different in NFL locker room: “The football locker room and the WWE locker room are two completely different things.”

He says that unlike an NFL locker room where 53 players comprise a single unit, the wrestling locker room is constructed of more individuals which lends itself to “more shots” for backstabbing.

“If you play a position, you play a position. if you don’t play a position, you’re really not a threat. In WWE, everybody really plays the same position. Everybody is trying to be a WWE Superstar. So, whatever shot you can take, whether it be if a person is gay or not, they’re going to try to make something of it. Whereas in football, whether a person is gay or not it doesn’t matter. If they go out and make plays, they make plays. Period. I can assure you there are guys, whether they came out openly gay or not, there gay guys in NFL and college locker rooms.”

    • Joe Hackel

      You sound bitter…

      • TheDazzler

        he’s probably southern

        • bleed420

im from philly you f’n piece of sh!&.where “REAL” wrestling fans come from new york/nj/philly.sick of guys like orton, miz the shield all guys ezcept bryan/punk can rot in hell

      • bleed420

        you sound like a puss

    • Robert

That was the dumbest shit I have ever read! He was getting a push long before he came out. As far as the real Americans goes, Anthonio is as talent as I’ve seen but swagger has no skills other armature wrestling. Get a life man

      • bleed420

so you support the gay black wrestler over jack swagger?!?!your a pure moron amateur wrestling fan

        • Louisa Baton

You put two labels on the guy so does that mean he’s twice as bad lol? He’s a Black gay guy and Jack Swagger is a White guy with a drinking problem. Which label is more of a detriment. I’ll give you a hint: Black and White have absolutely no bearing.

frankie go suck darren youngs bird

        • TheDazzler

          definitely a dago

  • Louisa Baton

What did you want to happen? Would you like him to be kicked out of WWE like Kanyon?

    • Matthew DeAngelo

You really think WWE let Kanyon go for being gay?

      • Louisa Baton

Oh yeah, and Orlando also was released.

        • Matthew DeAngelo

OMG Orlando is gay too? I never would have guessed…………………. But seriously you think that’s why they were let go?

          • Louisa Baton

Yes to Kanyon no to Orlando. Orlando was dating a 19 year old guy that was thought to be an even younger teenager.

          • Matthew DeAngelo

Kanyon was let go because he was hurt and he didn’t want to hurt himself worse. He didn’t get fired for being gay, even Vince isn’t stupid enough to fire a guy because he was gay

          • Louisa Baton

Now I didn’t say Kanyon didn’t have other issues I just said what the last straw happened to be at the time. Kanyon had emotional struggles and even though I heard that his statement was a gimmick he also claimed he wasn’t gay and then amended that so up to you if you only want to believe half. I know he was released and didn’t retire.

  • Matthew DeAngelo

I take it the topic in the WWE locker room will be Darren Young for months. OMG he’s gay, ok he’s gay, doesn’t mean we have to talk about it all the time

  • Louisa Baton

Remember I said Chavo was probably done from TNA? Just checking.

  • Robert

U r the moron cuz gay has NOTHING to do with talent. & YES! I support the black gay wrestler over the drunk white guy. Y? Because he has wayyyyyy more talent than swagger. Just as an FYI, some of WWE’s greatest have armature back grounds. Ie, Brock Lensar, Bret Hart, Rick & Scott Steiner, Ted Dibiase, Shelton Benjamin… Just to name a few. Ur just a dick that hides behind a computer but u have NO SENSE whatsoever!

  • Robert

I was back stage when the Orlando thing happened & he was released for being a dick not gay. Kanyon was let go cuz they had nothing for him. For god sakes people Pat Patterson pretty much runs the locker room & has major input on creative & has been doing so for over 20 years & he’s gay! WWE has nothing against gay people. It’s stupid people that barely know how to whip their asses but think they know what happens backstage. Smh at the whole world
