IWGP Heavyweight & IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match: EVIL (c)(w/ Dick Togo) vs. Tetsuya Naito
EVIL takes control early on and takes the action to the floor, using the barricade and some nearby ringside objects. He uses a chair from under the ring and wraps it around Naito’s neck, then grabs another and swings for the fences! The ref admonishes him and gets the champion back into the ring, while Dick Togo stands on their opponent’s neck out on the floor.
EVIL whips him hard into the exposed corner and Naito sells it like he’s been shot. They’ve been playing up his neck issues a lot on commentary. The champ does it again, before slapping on a headlock. Strap in folks, we’re gonna be here for a minute.
After some time Naito eventually rallies and comes off the ropes with a single leg dropkick. He hits some body shots and ducks a clothesline to take out Dick on the floor with a baseball slide, then turns back to EVIL to hit his signature corner dropkick combination. Big neckbreaker from Naito, and he gets his first two-count of the match.
The challenger locks in a leg scissors, but Dick Togo grabs a steel chair and distracts the referee, allowing EVIl to take a cheap shot and break the hold. Big thrust kick connects, and both men go down. EVIL stomps a mudhole in the corner and drags Naito the apron, setting up for Darkness Falls, but they trade shots and both end up crashing to the floor.
Both are slow to get back in the ring, answering the ref’s count at 18. Naito hits a neckbreaker for two. He goes to work on the neck and begins kicking the champion in the head repeatedly, telling him to get up and fight. EVIL obliges and throws him into the exposed turnbuckle for a third time.
After a few more minutes of brawling, EVIL connects with Darkness Falls for a nearfall. He signals for the end, but Naito blocks the STO and uses the ropes to drop the champ with a tornado DDT. Damage done to the neck. He follows with Gloria, once again to the neck, and doesn’t even go for the pin, instead opting to climb the ropes to hit a swinging DDT!
Naito goes for Destino but Dick Togo took a shot with a chair on the outside. The ref didn’t see it, as EVIL grabbed at him to block the finisher. They trade forearms and Naito hammers at the back of the neck, almost out of desperation. He takes out Togo, but again the distraction was enough for the champion to throw him into the exposed turnbuckle AGAIN!
With the challenger down, Dick actually attacks referee Red Shoes and takes him out on the floor. He gets in the ring and puts the boots to Naito, as the crowd smashes the “boo” key on their phones. Hilarious. They hit him with the Magic Killer, but Bushi runs out to make the save!
Here comes Gedo, because this IWGP double title match wasn’t already a mess. The numbers game gets the best of LIJ and Togo chokes out the challenger with his chain. They grab steel chairs, but SANADA hits the ring and goes crazy with dropkicks to Bullet Club. Gedo gets booted, Togo takes a TKO, and LIJ cleans house! “They’re taking out the trash!”
Naito takes down EVIL with a flying forearm and hits Destino, but commentary fell asleep and nobody got close to calling it. The referee has recovered, but EVIL hits a low blow and Everything Is Evil! 1… 2… NO!
Naito goes for a backslide, blocked. EVIL tries for the STO, blocked. Naito goes for something commentary calls a “new move” but he didn’t get all of it. An understatement. The challenger blocks another low blow and fires off with uppercuts. Destino! He picks him up… DESTINO AGAIN! 1… 2… 3!
