A Look at the NXT Takeover New York Card: What Else Does WWE Have Planned?

0

NXT Takeover: New York is going down on April 5 of course and many WWE fans are surely anticipating the event. Indeed, the black and gold brand almost always delivers, especially on the big stage and no stage is bigger than WrestleMania.

Takeover is two nights before Mania and it’s up to the NXT crew to kick off the weekend strong as only they can. Judging from the card that’s currently booked, it’s obvious that WWE plans to bring everything possible to ensure a great night of action.

The most updated Takeover card as of March 21 is as follows:

VELVETEEN DREAM VS. MATT RIDDLE, NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

SHAYNA BASZLER VS. IO SHIRAI, KAIRI SANE AND BIANCA BELAIR, FATAL 4-WAY FOR THE NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

PETE DUNNE VS. WALTER, NXT UK CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

JOHNNY GARGANO VS. ADAM COLE, 2-OUT-OF-3 FALLS MATCH FOR THE NXT CHAMPIONSHIP

All four matches are championship bouts of course, but there’s more to come. The War Raiders will defend the NXT Tag Team Championships against the winners of The Forgotten Sons versus Aleister Back and Ricochet. That match will take place on March 27 in the finals of The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Another championship match potentially brewing is one for the NXT UK Women’s title, as Toni Storm could indeed get booked on the card. The NXT UK tag team champions, James Drake and Zack Gibson, are also not listed for the event so far. Could the duo get a chance to showoff on Takeover?

Many fans were surely hoping for Keith Lee versus Dominik Dijakovic, but it’s unknown if that match will happen or not. The two men had a very memorable match on February 27, which left the WWE faithful wanting more. Both men have teased a Takeover rematch on social media. Maybe it will indeed happen on April 5.

But many top NXT stars are still not booked at this point. Kyle O’Reilly, Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong of The Undisputed Era are nowhere to be found. The same is true of The Street Profits, Moustache Mountain, Mia Yim and Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch.

However the real issue here is whether or not WWE would choose to feature so many matches that the night is overloaded. That’s been the chief complaint for fans regarding WrestleMania and this year will likely be no different. Right now there are nine matches on the Mania card and there’s probably more to come. Will Takeover follow suit with seven or more matches?

Stay tuned to Pro Wrestling, as any further updates to Takeover and WrestleMania will be covered as they happen.
