FreeSports announces second weekly 5 Star Wrestling TV series
UK sports channel to “sell 5 Star Wrestling worldwide”
Only UK-based live TV wrestling show to be repeated each week
Weekly 5 Star Wrestling series can reach 18 million UK homes
UK sports channel FreeSports has announced it will air a second 5 Star Wrestling programme in addition to the new live TV wrestling series starting next month.
Richard Webb, operations director for FreeSports, made the announcement at the 5 Star Wrestling LIVE on FreeSports launch in Sheffield.
Mr Webb said there were plans to air a one-hour 5 Star Wrestling programme on Saturday and Sunday mornings to include highlights from the previous Thursday’s three-hour live special.
He also said FreeSports aimed to sell the 5 Star Wrestling show to overseas TV channels.
5 Star Wrestling LIVE on FreeSports featuring John Morrison, Rey Mysterio, Rob Van Dam, Jake Hager (formerly Jack Swagger), Moose, Carlito, Chris Masters, PJ Black, Joey Axl, and a who’s who of British wrestling stars including Adam Maxted, Zack Gibson, El Ligero, Dave Mastiff, ‘English Lion’ Eddie Ryan, Jack Jester, Charlie Sterling, Nathan Cruz, Lou King Sharp, Kid Fite, Big Grizzly and Rampage Brown kicks off on Thursday, February 1 from 7pm-10pm at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
It will then be live every Thursday night with dates already announced for Newcastle, Sheffield, Plymouth, Belfast, Aberdeen, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Dundee, Blackburn and Cardiff.
The TV show will be the first and only live television series produced by a British wrestling company to air on prime time terrestrial television available to most homes in the UK and the only live TV wrestling series to originate in Europe.
FreeSports has a potential reach of 18 million UK homes including on Freesat, Freeview, Sky, Talk Talk TV and BT TV. There are more than 26 million UK households.
“It’s a really exciting time for us,” said Mr Webb, speaking at the Fly DSA Arena in Sheffield on Monday.
“In September we launched our free-to-air sports channel. It’s currently in 18 million homes. Sky Sports are in six million homes and BT Sport are in six million homes but we can reach 18 million of the 26 million UK homes. “We have a whole range of sports and will be live this year with more than 1,000 events – ice hockey, pool, rugby, football and wrestling. And it’s all free.
“The really great thing about this product is to have a live wrestling promotion every Thursday with big arenas and big budgets, a three-hour show.
“We will also air repeats and cut the show down into a one-hour highlights programme to air on Saturday and Sunday mornings which I think will work really well.
“It’s a great opportunity for the channel. The audience figures are positive. Things are going in the right direction and it can only get better by adding 5 Star Wrestling. There is a huge wrestling following out there. The posts we have put on social media about 5 Star Wrestling, we’ve been blown away. We’ve had about a quarter of a million views. That really bodes well for strong viewing figures.
“We also plan to sell this product abroad. There isn’t a lot of live wrestling televised and there are literally hundreds of sports channels around the globe so this is a great opportunity to get this brand across the globe as time goes on.
“I can’t wait for the first show to happen in a few weeks’ time!”
Mr Webb also called on UK wrestling fans to petition Virgin Media, whose TV channel as yet does not carry FreeSports. This, he said, would add another potential four million homes to the FreeSports reach.
Dan Hinkles, creator of 5 Star Wrestling, said: “When FreeSports first approached us, they made it crystal clear that they shared our vision for just how big 5 Star Wrestling could be and just now they have spoken in front of a room full of cameras and proved that they mean business!
“Not only will 5 Star Wrestling be broadcast live from 7pm-10pm every Thursday for wrestling fans around the country but FreeSports just made not one but three incredible announcements that demonstrates their level of commitment to the 5 Star Wrestling brand.
“The first major announcement was that each three hour live broadcast will be repeated multiple times per week, in order to maximise our viewership. The second major announcement was that FreeSports and 5 Star Wrestling are partnering up to create another TV series that will run on Saturdays and Sundays, which means 5 Star Wrestling have not one but two TV shows per week.
“And as if those announcements weren’t big enough, FreeSports are going to help sell 5 Star Wrestling: LIVE, to channels all around the world!
“I personally want to thank FreeSports for their support and I look forward to growing 5 Star Wrestling alongside FreeSports over the coming years.”
5 Star Wrestling:LIVE on FreeSports will feature commentary from UK wrestling personality, author and journalist Greg Lambert and top UK pro wrestler and British amateur freestyle wrestling champion Joe Hendry.
