Top Stars Pulled From NJPW Best Of The Super Juniors, Replacements Named

New Japan Pro-Wrestling announced today that both Flip Gordon and El Desperado have been pulled from the upcoming Best of the Super Juniors tournament, set to kick off on Monday, May 13th.

El Desperado unfortunately suffered a broken jaw earlier this week at the TakaTaichi Mania event at Korakuen Hall, put on by members of Suzuki-Gun, and Gordon was unable to secure a visa to Japan in time for the tour.

Best of the Super Juniors is the promotion’s annual round robin tournament exclusively for junior heavyweight wrestlers from all around the world.

Both stars were set to compete in the B Block, which features eight other competitors including Robbie Eagles, El Phantasmo, Bandido, Bushi, Will Ospreay, Ryusuke Taguchi, Rocky Romero and YOH.

Replacing Flip Gordon will be stand-out Young Lion Ren Narita in what is easily the biggest opportunity of his career. He has been training at the New Japan Dojo for the past three years, and will likely be graduating to the main roster or sent out on excursion later this year.

Replacing El Desperado, who was likely to be a big presence in this year’s tournament, will be replaced by the masked Japanese luchador DOUKI, who is being brought in by Suzuki-Gun. He has been wrestling all over Japan and Mexico for years, but this will be his first time in a New Japan ring.
