Io Shirai will compete in the Women’s Fatal 4-Way on the December 26 edition of NXT. The announcement came from NXT General Manager William Regal via Twitter, following Shirai’s tag team win with Dakota Kai. The two women faced off against Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir on the December 19 NXT.
The Fatal 4-Way will determine the next challenger for Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship. Shirai is joining Mia Yim, Lacey Evans and Bianca Belair in a match that could produce the next champion.
However Evans is on her way to the main roster in the near future, which means even if she wins the Fatal 4-Way, she may not win the championship. Belair, Yim and Shirai all seem to have a good chance of beating Baszler, though former champion Kairi Sane is still in the title hunt.
Io is one of the most popular Superstars in NXT and her rapid rise in the ranks sure comes as no surprise to longtime fans. She seems fully capable of carrying the responsibility of NXT Women’s champion and it’s likely only a matter of time until she wins the belt.
Congratulations on tonight’s victory @shirai_io. Let’s see if you can keep that momentum going, because you’ve qualified for next week’s #1 Contender Fatal 4-Way Match!
