Kofi Kingston sent out a Tweet in response to the news that he will be running the gauntlet on SmackDown Live.
The gauntlet is set to take place on March 19 and will see The New Day member square off against five of the blue brand’s best Superstars. The matches were announced on the March 12 edition of SmackDown and those matches feature Cesaro, Sheamus, Erick Rowan, Samoa Joe and Randy Orton.
If Kingston can get past each one, then he will earn a WWE Championship match against Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35 on April 7. Vince McMahon staked the deck against Kofi after telling the 11-year veteran that he didn’t believe Kingston has what it takes to be a world champion.
WWE fans definitely disagree with that sentiment of course, as Kingston has amassed a serious following over the past several weeks. Kofi has always been a popular Superstar but this recent burst is about much more than just The New Day or feel good moments at The Royal Rumble.
This is about reaching the top of the company. Whether or not Kofi Kingston will actually be able to get there is up to WWE of course. But it does seem as though all of this work is being done to get him over on a level that he’s never seen before.
I’ve always known that my road to the WWE Championship was never going to be an easy one, but next weeks gauntlet match will be a tough and seemingly insurmountable mountain to climb…so let’s get our mountain boots on and get to climbing. #LFG
