For the first time in 18 years, WWE suddenly finds themselves with legitimate competition in the primetime television space.
In a partnership so poetic it could only happen in pro wrestling, WarnerMedia announced Wednesday an exclusive deal with All Elite Wrestling for a live, weekly wrestling program set to debut on TNT — the same network that carried WWE’s last rival, WCW Monday Nitro, during the iconic “Monday Night Wars”.
Feedback to AEW’s historic announcement have been coming out of the woodwork, although WWE talent and executives have understandably remained quiet on the matter. One individual from the NXT brand who wasted no time in sharing his opinions, the “Original Bro” Matt Riddle, took to Twitter with the following:
“The face you make when you know the greatest era of wrestling is about to begin because of great competition! Thank you!”
