WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley recently Tweeted on the 20th anniversary of his first WWE Championship win. That win came against The Rock during Monday Night Raw on December 29, 1998. The program was taped and actually shown on January 4, 1999.

Foley got the pin on The People’s Champ following an assist from Stone Cold Steve Austin. The match itself was a who’s who of WWE legends, as Triple H, D-Generation X, Vince McMahon and Kane were all present at ringside for the match as well.
But Foley’s first WWE title win was not without controversy. That controversy was due to WCW announcer Tony Schiavone sarcastically commenting on Mick’s victory as a moment “that’s gonna put some butts in the seats.”
The move backfired of course, as more than 600,000 WCW Nitro fans immediately changed the channel to see Foley beating The Rock on Raw. To his credit, Schiavone later said that he was instructed to belittle Foley’s win by WCW President Eric Bischoff.
