New Japan Pro-Wrestling has officially announced its return to Madison Square Garden.
The news broke on Sunday during the promotion’s annual New Beginning event in Osaka, Japan, confirming our report from earlier in the week. The event will be entitled NJPW Wrestle Dynasty, and as expected will take place on Saturday, August 22nd at the world’s most famous arena.
That date is a bold move for New Japan, as they will not only be running head-to-head against one of the biggest NXT Takeover specials of the year, but they will look to sell-out The Garden while WWE runs its annual SummerSlam weekend over three hours away in Boston.
No names have been announced for the event thus far, although all of the top names and champions are expected with the exception of Jon Moxley, who generally does not work New Japan events in the U.S. due to his contract with All Elite Wrestling.
Interestingly enough, the announcement was made by New Japan alone with no mention of Ring of Honor involvement. While ROH stars may be added to the card, this looks to be a stand-alone venture unlike their sold-out show at The Garden during WrestleMania 35 weekend.
This January, the Tokyo Dome experienced Wrestle Kingdom.
This summer, Madison Square Garden will experience Wrestle Dynasty!
We'll see you August 22 @thegarden!
