New Japan Pro-Wrestling held a press conference today to confirm several major matches for the first ever Wrestle Kingdom double-header at the Tokyo Dome.
In addition to Kazuchika Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against 2019 G1 Climax winner Kota Ibushi on Jan. 4th, the promotion has also confirmed that Jay White will defend the IWGP Intercontinental title against Tetsuya Naito.
The “Aerial Assassin” and British sensation Will Ospreay will also be in a marquee match on Jan. 4th when he defends the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship against the returning Hiromu Takahashi, who will be making his highly anticipated return to the ring after 16 months on the injured list.
Night two at the Tokyo Dome also got a lot more interesting, with four huge matches announced. As expected, Hiroshi Tanahashi will face Chris Jericho in a first-time battle of “The Ace” and “The Painmaker. And after winning the 2019 Super Jr. Tag League for the third consecutive year, Roppongi 3K will challenge Bullet Club’s Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championships.
NJPW has also officially confirmed that the much-talked-about double title main event will in fact take place. The winner of the IWGP Heavyweight title match and the winner of the IWGP Intercontinental title match on Jan. 4th will face off on night two in a winner-takes-all battle for both of the promotion’s top championships.
Finally, the losers of each main event title match will also face off on night two. For example, if Ibushi defeats Okada to win the Heavyweight title on Jan. 4th, and Naito defeats Jay White, then the main event of Jan. 5th will be Ibushi vs. Naito, and Okada will face off against White in a special singles match.
