Rey Mysterio Makes Surprise Appearance at NJPW Strong Style Evolved; Marty Scurll Attacks, Major Challenge Issued

Despite a biceps injury keeping him off this weekend’s NJPW Strong Style Evolved event, Rey Mysterio made a surprise appearance in Long Beach to personally apologize to the fans for missing his scheduled “dream match” against Jushin Thunder Liger. He also promised that he would compete inside a New Japan ring as soon as he was medically cleared to do so.

Liger went on to face IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay instead. The legendary veteran tore the house down with an opponent far less than half his age while the former WWE Champion watched on from ringside.

Following the bout Ospreay claimed to be no man’s filler opponent, and promised to distinguish his championship reign by collecting victories over the industry’s greatest legends. With a win over Liger in the books, the British high-flyer set his sights on Rey Mysterio, officially challenging him to a match for the title. Before the two could agree on terms, the “Villain” Marty Scurll attacked everyone, laying out Liger, grounding an already damaged Ospreay, and even stealing the mask of America’s favorite lucha libre legend.

As announced, NJPW will be returning to the U.S. for a massive show on July 7th at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. It’s unclear what Mysterio’s plans are, and as we’ve reported numerous times WWE is still hoping to bring him back to the company for another run, but if his “bucket list” dream of wrestling for New Japan comes true this year that seems as likely a time as any.
