Ricochet Talks Hiroshi Tanahashi Giving His Blessing on the “Ace” Nickname

WWE Superstar Ricochet recently appeared on Lillian Garcia’s Chasing Glory podcast, where he spoke about his run in Vince McMahon’s company, including his gimmick as the “Ace of NXT.”

The high-flying star certainly raised some eyebrows in fan circles when he began using the moniker on WWE’s black and gold brand. The nickname is most famously used by legendary New Japan star Hiroshi Tanahashi, who is referred to as “The Ace of New Japan.”

But while many longtime New Japan fans perhaps took issue with Ricochet using the Ace nickname, the truth is that he reached out to Tanahashi before moving forward. But Ric not only asked for permission to use the name, he also wanted Tana’s blessing on his new ring gear.

“I messaged him and asked him, ‘hey, do you mind if I use that style of jacket and if I call myself the Ace of NXT and I guess now, the Ace of all WWE’ and he’s like ‘sure no problem, please,. He’s like ‘yeah, I would like that.’ I was like ‘thank you so much, it means a lot to me to be able to carry that on.”

Ricochet spent some time in New Japan of course, where he had what many believed to be was one of the era’s best matches against Will Ospreay. Ric also spent some time working in Lucha Underground as Prince Puma. But both of those stops were on the way to Ricochet’s current run in WWE.

Ricochet is now an official member of the company’s main roster. Ric spent the past few months working in a tag team with fellow NXT standout Aleister Black and the two men appeared on Monday Night Raw, as well as SmackDown Live. But April 15’s Superstar Shake-Up saw both Superstars added to the red brand from this point on.
