The press conference for Bellator 221 took place on May 9, giving fans an up-close look at the promotion’s top fighters as they prepare for the big event. Bellator 221 is scheduled for May 11 and the highlight of the card for pro wrestling fans is the Jake Hager fight.
Hager, known as Jack Swagger in WWE, will compete in his second MMA fight. Hager’s opponent is T.J. Jones, a relatively unknown fighter, though Jake is not taking him lightly. Jones was asked during the press conference about how he felt being on the big stage of Bellator.
“It’s probably one of the most humbling experiences of my life. You’ve got nothing but world class champions up here and then you’ve got Jake. So, it’s very cool to be up here with these guys.”
Jones revealed that MMA is not a full-time job for him, as he also works in a beef plant, supporting his six kids. While Hager’s opponent was obviously out of place during the press conference, the tone of the room changed somewhat when Jones mentioned his family.
But Hager looks more intense than he perhaps ever has and it’s clear that he’s focused on the task at hand.
“What I like to do is go out there and wrestle. That’s no secret. And I think we’re going to see that Saturday night, whether you put your back against the cage or not.”
Hager’s comment was a direct response to Jones pointing out that Jake’s first opponent, J.W. Kiser, put his back on the cage for most of the fight. This allowed Hager to do whatever he wanted, giving him the win in the first round.
Hager comes into this fight with a record of 1-0, while Jones comes in with a record of 1-1.
