We kick off tonight’s Monday Night Raw with the usual opening promo and it’s Universal Champion, Roman Reigns who is out to start things, dressed in casual attire instead of his Shield gear. Roman says he feels like he owes everyone an apology.

He has come out and spoken and said he would be here every week and would be a fighting champion, but it’s all lies. The reality is, his real name is Joe and he has been living with Leukemia for eleven years and sadly it is back and that means he can’t be the fighting champion. Roman announces he is relinquishing the Universal Championship.

Roman says he was diagnosed with it and he quickly put it into remission, but that was a tough point in his life. He said that the team that gave him a chance was WWE. Roman says that the fans have made his dreams come true, and that it didn’t matter if they cheered or booed him, they reacted to him and that is the most important thing.

He says, sometimes life throws a curveball and therefore┬áthe best thing for him to do right now is go home and focus on his health. He says by no means is this a retirement speech, because once he is done whooping Leukemia’s ass again, he is coming home.

When he does, it’s not about titles but a purpose, but he wants to show the world and his friends and family that when life throws a curveball at him, he will swing for the fences every single time. Roman says he will beat this and will be back and we will see him very soon. Reigns thanks the fans, says he loves them and leaves the title in the ring to a fantastic, well-deserved reaction by the WWE Universe. Before he can head to the back his Shield brothers head out an hit one more, very emotional Shield pose.

After the commercial, Michael Cole addresses the situation and wish him the best as the crowd chants “Cancer sucks” as a clearly emotional Renee Young and Corey Graves talk about their feelings of him.

After such an emotional start to tonight’s WWE Raw, we move on to our first piece of action as Finn Balor takes on Bobby Lashley. However, before that, we get a promo from 205 Live star, Lio Rush who puts over his client before the match begins.

Right from the start Bobby Lashley immediately starts throwing his power and strength around and once Balor finally got some offense in, Lio Rush was able to intervene as Balor gave chase only to eat a huge clothesline on the outside.

Back from commercial and Lashley is once again in charge as Rush chants his name at ringside. Whilst the match goes on Cole notes on commentary that Baron Corbin and Stephanie McMahon have been on the phone in regards to the Roman Reigns situation and an update will come soon.

Balor then manages to hit a double baseball dropkick to create a little space and the first ever Universal Champion attempts to pick up the pace, taking down Lashley and following it up with a double stomp to the chest.

Finn then hits a big chop and tries to dive from the second rope but is caught straight away by Lashley who hits a Samoan Drop but only gets a two count. Despite Lashley continuing to dominate, Balor smartly catches the bigger man out with a small package and a quick win.

Winner: Finn Balor
